The system of wealth-based pretrial incarceration requires that we pay money in order to buy the freedom of our neighbors, and Champaign County Bailout Coalition’s intervention in this system in turn requires that we raise the money to pay our neighbors’ bonds until that unjust system has been abolished.
This work is tied directly to your donation. Your donation pays the bail of individuals held in pretrial detention in the Champaign County jail, and then comes back to CCBC after the completion of that individual’s trial. We then use that same donation again to pay someone else’s bond. 10% of every donation goes to our fiscal sponsor, the Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center, for administrative costs. For every individual who we bail out, Champaign County retains another 10% of the paid bond amount for court costs and financing the Circuit Clerk’s Office. We also must pay a non-refundable $34 in processing fees to the Sheriff’s office.
